Keeping it cool with the right colors

Deathcabforcutie.com has some really nice things going on throughout the website and the colors are just one of the first
things to catch my eye.

Orange, black, various grays, and an offset tan are what make up most of the DCFC website. This isn't a common palette used today in the web world and I think that's one of the reasons why the site is so successful. Plus it just plain works.

Primary colors are setup through links, headers and
background panels

color 2
The color remains constant through other pages as well, such as the DCFC forum

There seems to be a natural (or photoshopped) relationship between the color/tint of the website and photographs viewed in the gallery

Consistancy in Elements and Style

There is a great consistency in the Death Cab For Cutie website that hops from the home page and into each of the other pages as well. The same "cut out" shapes and rough/clean style give it a great balance overall.

The old bruised and battered effect on this photo matches the grunge effect of the Death Cab For Cutie logo seen across the website. There is also the same worn theme around the photos viewable in the gallery (see bottom left).

Another nice and subtle consistant theme is the use of irregular shapes as background elements. They are first seen at the home page where they are used as part of large navigation buttons.

Small Tidbit

If you look carefully, when your mouse is hovered over the DCFC logo on just about any other page besides the home page, you can rearrange the letters anywhere within its parameters. Just a nice,
clever addition.

Is this page designed for web or print?

This website is extremely clean and appears to have an alignment grid behind it. Every page is setup to match the two column content area and one column extra info side bar. While there is plenty of content available, I feel that the site was designed for web more so than print. I say this because there are many photographs and videos on the site, much more than actual type. While you could still print out many of the pages, the majority is media heavy.
